The paper begins with an introduction about the transit from time division multiplexing to wavelength division multiplexing. Then

it describes in detail the application of WDM systems on long distance lines and possible applications in local networks

including those interoffice lines and some access lines. The paper also points out the possibility of using WDM technology in developing all optical networking

as well as the applications of WDM systems in submarine optical cables.
