The notion of statistical traffic envelope is capable of expressing various types of network traffic with a uniform formulation

which leads to general results of statistical performance analysis.In this paper

we survey various formulations of statistical traffic envelope

and summarize the implications and limitations of these definitions.Open issues are also presented for further study and application.
