This paper briefly discusses some preliminary considerations for planning the optical fiber LAN and MAN. These include: the choice for computer data communication vs integrated service digital communication; choice of the digital rate and network diameter; choice of optical fiber vs conductor cable as transmission medium; choice of network topology architecture and protocols; application on technoloy; consideration on LAN and MAN’s access to public exchange network; tetherless access of personal portable radio communicator to LAN and MAN; and consideration on the joint operation of lightwave and microwave networks.
