This paper discusses the mechanical reliability of long—length optical fibers. Two kinds of reference techniques for proof testing of optical fiber strength as well as the test methods are briefly presented. Optical fiber strength after proof testing is theoretically

optical fiber lifetime is estimated and the lifetime design picture of optical fiber which passed three—grades proof testing strain is given.
