摘要

本文首先简述频分、时分和波分多路传输系统的发展过程。详细解释波分多路所需的光纤和波分多路合用的光纤放大器。然后，说明波分多路系统在传输干线和在全光通信网应用的光辉前景。

Abstract

The paper begins with outlining the historical developments from frequency division to time division and then to wavelength division multiplexing systems. Then

it explains the fiber characteristics required by WDM systems and the fiber amplifier used together with WDM systems. Finally

it describes the applications of WDM systems on point-to-point transmission lines as well as in optical communication networking

indicating their bright prospects.
